    World War 1

Hi Retlaw, Canning Street ran between Richmond Street and Ranger Street, one up from Scaitcliffe Street. davidf

Site of Broughtons Plumbers Merchants Paradise Street

Might it help to jog people's memories if we knew the date - year at least - of this fire?

Should the TV License be scrapped?

I watch some German TV here in England because I bought a dongle for about £20. And when I visit Germany I take a telly with me and watch some on that.

old st peters school crown street

I think that St Peter's Institute was a building mainly fronting Richmond Street, but also at the corner of Higher Antley Street. It was on the left hand side facing up Richmond Street.

    Observer obituaries

I'm another Accy Lad who lives elsewhere, and this continually annoys me because I, too, want to browse to see if I recognise anyone from the past.

    Dill Hall Lane..

Hi Retlaw, Fountain Street and, I think, Garbett Street are two exceptions to the rule as they say.

    Plusnet - Any Good?

I've been with Plusnet for a couple of years and found their customer services very good, and I have anytime phone calls included for less than £300 per annum. My problem is with broadband speed (s l o w) but Plusnet tell me that this is because of the copper telephone cable and my distance...

    accy cinema

I went there occasionally in the very early 1950s and films were shown on Saturday afternoons, I seem to remember that the admission fee was 4d whereas it was 6d in the Odeon on Saturday mornings.

    Rothwell Heights

I never swam in this lodge although a group of us lads once built a raft which floated on it rather lopsidedly even with one or two of us on board. In those days, around 1954, we knew it as Shutt's Lodge but no-one has mentioned that name on this post - does anyone have any clues as to why? We...

    Where is this?

What intrigues me is the tightness of the curve, it looks much too tight to be either Burnley or Accrington compared to how the viaducts and final approaches to both stations are depicted on my old maps.

    Where is this?

In the book "The Archive Photographs Series - Accrington" by John Goddard is a photo showing the Manchester platform, and the date is given as 1970. A single track is there for all to see, and part of the caption accompanying the photo reads, "The Manchester platform and the booking hall were...

    Where is this?

Gremlin, can you please clarify whether it's supposed to have been taken in 1967 or 1957? Didn't there used to be a footbridge from the Blackburn platform to the Manchester platform? It doesn't appear in the photo, though.

    The Ibbets - Oswaldtwistle

Thanks, ttwood49, for inadvertently helping me to locate the area which was known as Top, or Tops. In researching my family history I've found an Alice Riley who lived with her family at Tops, Oswaldtwistle at the 1851 census. davidf

    The Empire.

:) Sorry to be late (!), but I think that the building was originally the New Jerusalem Temple and was built in about 1842. A great grandfather of mine got married there in 1868. And, yes, I too sometimes went to the Empire Dance Hall - around late 1959/early 1960.
