Just to stop the whining about this dogs balls and ownership, blah, blah... He was dumped at a dog pound where they kept him for the required time, before legally signing him over to the charity. The policy is to have all dogs 'fixed' before rehoming.

I'm sorry to hear about your illness. Traveling abroad sounds like just the thing. Dogs are hard work and not easy to travel with. Funny, I'm actually a cat person myself, but ended up adopting whippets after their elderly owner passed away (another charity I'm with) and have fallen for them...
