I know that increasingly I am becoming the female version of Victor Meldrew...I can't help it.
Life is conspiring against me.
A couple of weeks ago I had an e-mail from my bank.
It was to tell me that online purchases with my debit card was going to come in for some changes.
I must be getting an old stick beause these days I want the comfort of 'sameness'.
I don't want to be having to get used to new uncertain things.
Not that I pay for much online with my debit card.....I use Paypal(but Whoa...that is changing too).
I phoned the bank and they told me that every online payment I make with my debit card will have to be verified with a six digit code(which will change every time I make a purchase).....and that this would be sent to me via my mobile phone.
Well good luck with that one...I do not use a mobile phone...yes I have one...lurking somewhere at the bottom of my bag...it is never switched on unless I have a dire emergency when I am out.....a £20 top up will ast me a year.
So I contacted the bank and told them that I do not have a mobile phone.
'That's OK' they said 'we will just send the number to your landline.
I still fretted about this. I felt that it was a total imbuggerance...something I could do without.
I went into the Preston Branch for further reassurance...I was told that this is an extra layer of security...to protect my money.
I looked at what I used my card online for.....it seemed it was just to pay my council tax.
A thought occurred to me.
I can set up my internet banking to cover this..problem solved(well yes...after a lot of head scratchimg to try and remember how to set up a new payee on my account).
So there I was congratulating myself that I need worry no longer about this issue.
Today I got an urgent message from the bank.....'Downlaod the APP' it screamed at me.
So I had yet another conversation with a very pleasant young man...who derided me not for having no love for a mobile phone.
Again he went through the process with me and told me that they expect some people to feel uncertain about the new process.
so there I was telling Nicola I had sorted out this imbuggerance....then she dropped the bombshell that Paypal will be bringing in the same sort of system.....damn, blast and buggerations.
Why does everything have to be so bloody awkward.....don't answer that...it is me that is awkward....and I suppose that once I have dealt with it a few times I will get used to it.
this new system will mean that will not be able to order stuff on the QT...because himself will know I have succumbed to E-bay each time the phone goes and i am given the code by a robotic voice.
Except...when I have got used to that someone somewhere will throw me another curved ball.
Stop it out there...I know you lot are laughing your socks off at a daft old bird.
