We went to see my Uncle last night and it was truly horrific. One of the staff was attacked by the big Scottish man, everybody was screaming and rocking and wailing, it was all very frightening.
We did get to speak to the nurse in charge before it all kicked off. She was very nice and explained what the doctor had said, and what the plan is, and that she did think with the right drugs my uncle would eventually be able to come home. Basically he can't leave, and if he did the nurses can lawfully hold him for six hours, in which time they'd section him.
My uncle thankfully didn't ask us to take him home, but he was very confused and upset. This time last year I had to go to the emergency dentist at the hospital to have a tooth out. My aunt and uncle drove me up there in their rangerover, twelve months later she's dead and he's more or less imprisoned there. All very frightening, it's a good job we don't know what the future holds. Sieze the day.
After an hour and fifty minutes I left to go and wait in the car, and to have a much needed cigarette. I did get quite introspective. I am of course upset for my uncle, but selfishly at the back of my mind is the fact that there is an eighty percent chance that I will develop dementia within ten to fifteen years. As I was sat in there with the wind and rain lashing the car, I did decide one thing, and that was I'll never end up in there. I once wrote in favour of euthanasia in the forum, which I am. You can bet your bottom dollar that if I decide my quality of life isn't what I expect of it, I will finish the job properly. I will not end my days a prisoner for my own safety, sat like a zombie in a chair, surrounded by violent people, whilst the Simpsons merrily flickers away unwatched on the television in the corner.
In the mean time, whatever the future holds, I'm going to try and make the most of every minute, and have a damn good, guilt free time.
