What an unexpectedly lovely day today has been. I don't mean the weather just today in general. I was supposed to be working a long day today and tomorrow which is just my luck really as Sparks came home yesterday and I haven't seen him for 10 days. Determined to get a little time off with him and use a bit of leave which I have been struggling to get in, I phoned my manager yesterday. She said that the number of staff in the unit wasn't good, but it was better in the morning than the afternoon so she gave me a mornings leave and I was to do a late shift today.
That was great because it allowed us to go to Manchester last night and have a lovely meal out at Choice at Castlefield. it was a sticky night last night and I struggled to sleep, but at least I knew that I didn't have to get up at 5.45am.
I was just having a brew this morning at about 9.30 when my phone rang. It was my manager, she had looked at the rotas for the unit and discovered that there was an extra member of staff on the late shift who had been unaccounted for, and offered me the whole day as leave. I didn't need to be offered twice as sparks had taken a leave day today due to being jet lagged. I phoned him immediately and we planned a day out. We haven't had a day out in ages, with him working away, me working a lot of weekends and using every spare minute for dissertation work we are seriously lacking in days out this year.
We drove over to Settle and had fish and chips for lunch, then on to Ingleton. We did the waterfall walk, about 4 1/2 miles of lovely scenery, waterfalls and pools. It was hot!!!! but we took water, suncream, hats and bought an ice lolly on the way round from a little van parked up about mid way round. I haven't had a cider lolly since I was a child, it was lovely. Of course they aren't really cider, just apple flavoured, but my love of them as a child must have led to my love of Strongbow now (if any of your kids likes cider lollies.......I'm telling you now, it does not bode well).
The car was like an oven when we got back into it, thank heavens for air conditioning. We stopped at the station pub and had a cold drink then came home. My arms are pink and freckly, I was like a nasty oil slick of suncream and dead midges, I have blisters on my toes and every time I licked my lips I tasted salt but..........what a lovely day out.
