Bye bye chuck...

It's been an eventful week at work, believe me......the abuse that NHS staff get is dreadful and I'm totally sick of it. Abuse aside, I have been working with a good crowd and we have stuck together like glue this week through various incidents.

Last night we had a Jacob's join. One of my colleagues is leaving to work in Dubai. A very popular member of the team and one of my ex students we decided to have a little feast so we all brought various nibbles, cakes, biscuits, dips etc.

I will really miss her and remember the day that we first met. I was working as a community midwife in Hyndburn and was informed that due to having the teaching and assessing certificate I was to be allocated a new student. I had been allocated students from nearly every new intake for a few years and felt that other members of my team were dragging their feet in gaining the assessors certificate as a means of getting out of having a student. I wanted to just go out, do my work and not have to bother with the added task of having to teach..... All in all, I just wanted a few weeks where I didn't have to bother about anyone else.

I duly waited for her at the bus station on her first day and was met by a 20 year old, tongue pierced lass with long hair. My first thought was 'what the bloody hell have they sent me?'

As the days went on I found that I was working with a very motivated, friendly, good humoured young lady who genuinely cared about the women. She was a fast learner and could crack some wicked jokes, always good for a laugh we had some fun community days and clinics. My caseload at the time was in one of Hyndburn's rougher areas and the women loved her down to Earth manner and the fact that she calls everyone 'chuck'.

She finished her training and ended up working with me again when I moved back into the hospital to become shift leader on CDS. She was very supportive of me in my new unfamiliar role and I of her in her role as a newly qualified midwife and she has turned into a damn good one.

I am really pleased for her and we will be keeping in touch and of course, if I ever want to visit I am more than welcome. So despite being busy last night, we found time to say ta-ra to our 'chuck' and wish her well in her new life.:D
