An early start to Yorkshire saw us return with treasure.
We bought a beautiful painting by an artist we already had a work by.
The first time we bought a painting by this artist we found it by chance in Portebello some ten years ago. Mum and l have very much the same taste in lots of things. We had fought our way through the crowds of this tourist Mecca one hot July Saturday morning. Nothing much had caught our attention except for one painting. It was in it's original Art's and Crafts bronzed icanthus leafed frame, and was a portrait of a boy in a sunhat painted in 1907.
This was the year after Dad had died and six months after Ma'a triple heart bypass. With a little encouragment from me, along the lines of- 'it isn't that much money' and 'you haven't had a holiday, you deserve it,' we decided to buy it.
It wasn't a fortune, in fact we had found a bargain. Usually though we hunted for bargains, and would come home with change out of a twenty pound note.
Between us we managed to scrape enough cash together with various cashcards to buy the painting. We had smiles on our faces as we caught the tube back to south London with our new tresure.
With some research, I found out that this woman artist had been painting in Newlyn at the time that this Cornish school had really been an important place in the world of art. She later moved to Carnforth and had been connected with the Lakeland Art Society in the 20's and 30's.
Anyway we returned back across the Yorkshire border today into Lancashire with the same silly grin on our faces. Result.
