l must have felt fairly isolated, [l think l still would regarding some of the recent comments on here about 'normal' men,] and still had a need to meet other people like myself, which is a bit daft because there's no one quite like me!
Anyway unpreturbed by my visit to lil' Doctor Mike, l answered another personal ad in Time Out. By this time l was at Liverpool Art School. Again letters were exchanged, photos, and heights! Reimund seemed very nice, funny and we got on. His photograph showed a sunny face and smile, with blond her and a tan- God he sounds like Rocky, of the Horror Show!
Tickets were booked. Train from Liverpool to London. Tube from Euston to Liverpool Street. Train from BR station to Harwich Docks. Ferry, Harwich to the Hook of Holland. Train to Copenhagen, remembering to get off at Hamburg. lt was quite a journey and took me about 36 hours, but it was exciting.
Hamburg Station.
There weren't any steam trains there then, but that's what it felt like as the crowded platform cleared.l was like Bobbie, [Jenny Agutter,] in the Railway Children, waiting for 'her Daddy' to return on the train from prison, emerging through the smoke. None of the porters looked like Perks, [Bernard Cribbens,] though! Alone on the platform the two of us realised who each was. l was me, he might have been pleased or not l don't know. He was 30 stone! l hadn't been conned, l too had sent my most flattering picture, ie; on holiday, brown rather than normal pasty Liverpool white, but he should have mentioned his new size l think. Before l'm labelled a nasty sizist, l have nothing against larger people, or shorter people for that matter, it was more to do with Trading Standards and the recentness of the piccies!
Long story, blah, blah, blah.....
That summer l was starting my dissertation for my degree which l was doing on Germany in the 30's, particularly as written about by Christopher Isherwood, [ Mr Norris Changes Trains/Liza in Caberet/rise of Nazism, etc.] So l decided not to stay in Hamburg for the two weeks as planned with Reimund, who incidently had a partner whom he'd asked to move out for a fortnight! l spent the night on his floor, with one eye open, and left the next morning for the station.
Berlin here l come, open your Iron Curtains Garinda's coming through.
The planned two weeks turned into two months, and was when l finally became a 'man'! Lol.
I've never answered a personal ad from that day to this.
I'm also never invited to more than three dinner parties, as l've told my only two stories at the first two!
