Dream big.

In the last few days my daughters son(used to be know as the ankle biter, but now he towers over me) has been quite excited.
He is now 14 and a pupil at St Christopher's.
His year were told that they were going to have an opportunity to go and do some volunteer work in Borneo.
This will not be until the summer of 2020.
The reason that they are being given the 'heads up' so far in advance is because to go on this wonderful expedition he will have to raise over four thousand pounds.
This works out at something like £45 every week from now until the time that they would be going.

The school want the onus of the fund raising to be on the pupil who wants to go.
This is so that the child can show a commitment to the project.
That they will work tirelessly towards their goal.

The trip looks absolutely brilliant.
We(the lad, his dad and me) went to see the promotion of the expedition tonight.
It is something I would have loved to have been able to do.
I can understand why the lad felt excited.
Because even though this trip would be hard work....they are expected to go into local communities and do projects which can involve helping out in a primary school, or digging a well so that a village gets clean water, it could involve building work or environmental work.
So it is not all beer and skittles.
There would be an opportunity to climb Mt Kinabalu over two days...to see the sunrise over the mountains.
They might get to do white water rafting, a four day PADI Dive course is provided too.

It is a trip that would take him out of his comfort zone. It would give him a level of independence and confidence that only world travel gives.
It would allow him to develop leadership/teamwork skills.

All of this hangs by the thread of gaining some kind of either regular work or sponsorship.

We are going to send for the fundraising pack that is available from the expedition leaders...then we will sit down and see if there is any way that we can plaster a smile on his face and get him out to see the Orang-utans of Borneo.
I think it is going to be a tough ask.

I have told him to dream big....you can grow into your big dreams.
I am also going to tell him that I will match whatever he can raise...pound for pound.

Margaret, you know how I feel about this - it is a brilliant opportunity for your lad, and one that he really shouldn't/mustn't miss out on.

I know it's a lot of money for him to have to come up with but you have a wide audience of friends on this forum and I'm sure that if you can find a suitable fundraiser for them to participate in there will be some who will join in. I will for one. Don't hesitate to ask.

Oh..Dorothy, I was going to ask Neil if it was permissible to ask for any kind of help to further the efforts.
Every pound he raises takes him almost 4 miles towards his aim.
And even cheering messages or advice of who to contact is very valued.
Thank you for your support.
