When I asked the neurologist for something to help me sleep better, I did so under duress. Over a year of sleeping very little, sometimes going for four days and night without a wink of sleep, had pushed me to the edge.
I really didn't want to take anymore drugs than I had to. He told me these new tablets were sleeping tablets and an antidepressant. I told him my fears of taking any more drugs, and the hallucinations and feeling of drunkeness I'd experienced with the two lots I'd decided to stop taking by myself. The neurologist told me that I could take these just when I needed a good nights sleep, Mum was with me, and confirms this is what he told us.
After a few weeks of still not sleeping, and ocasionally taking these new pills I decided to find out some more about them. The internet is fantastic for finding information. First of all I found out that the new drug isn't a sleeping tablet at all, it's purely an antidepressant. Furthermore, to work it needs at least two to three weeks of a constant intake of the drug to have any effect. You can't stop and start, like I had been doing for the first few weeks.
Searching through mainly American drug sites, because they can legally tell you more, was interesting, if not sometimes a little frightening, especially when finding out about the drug and Parkinsons. I did find out I would need to take them continually to have any positive effect.
The great news though is for the last two nights I've slept fantastically well. It looks as if the drugs are starting to work. My mood seems to have lightened as well. I'm not getting too excited yet, but I'm certainly enjoying the feeling of having a good nights sleep.
Bring it on.
