Last night at work was the most soul destroying night ever!!!!! It started off as normal and time seemed to tick by at its usual rate. I was in the middle of examining someone when the clocks in our delivery rooms spontaneously reset themselves and went back an hour... I could have cried. The rest of the night just dragged. Two of our colleagues came to work half an hour early this morning so that we could go home early. It was very much appreciated as I'd pretty much lost the will to live by then.

All of the delivery room clocks are on a system which enables them to reset when the clocks go back or foreward. Unfortunately the clock in our office is on no such system. It was great looking at the office clock and thinking 'not long to go now.' It was soul destroying walking back into the delivery rooms and realising that we still had ages left to work....

The reason that the clocks reset is that time of birth is very important. When people ring their relatives to say that they've delivered they are alway asked "what is it?" "What does it weigh?" "What time was it?" We record time of birth to the minute and it can also be important in legal issues too. We do occasionally get confusing scenarios around time of birth...... Here's a corker..

A mother of twins is in labour and delivers her first twin at 01.55. Ten minutes later the second twin appears, it is now 01.05........ That's what happens to us when the clocks go back. The second twin and placentas can be born before the first twin, something that is a physical impossibility becomes a documentation nightmare, as the computers also reset themselves and will often not accept this kind of information. Something seems to happen to our computers when the time changes. Honestly, I spent most of the latter part of the night doling out percussive maintenence on the darned computer and printer...

At least the time change is over with for another season.... I have a quiet night in with Sparky planned, as I am off work tonight... I'm looking forward to it, we haven't had much time together since he came back from Italy. I feel a glass of red wine coming on......
