When I got home that evening I felt like I was walking on air. I went to bed but couldn't sleep. That goodnight kiss haunted me. I hugged it to myself and I replayed the day over in my head. Savouring it again and again. I couldn't wait for Wednesday. I remembered what R***** had said about D***, he was a thoroughly nice guy......oooh how I hate that tired word 'nice'...... but I couldn't think of another word that would fit. He was tall, he was handsome, he was gentle.......and I liked him......I liked him a lot.
Wednesday came, I went to work in a skirt but took a pair of trousers with me...... to make the most of the time we had together D*** was going to pick me up from work. I didn't finish until 1pm, Dave had to be home for 4pm so I didn't want to waste time going home and getting changed.
I had a sandwich at work. D*** turned up right on the dot of 1pm...... my boss shooed me off and told me to 'behave'.
We went for a ride through Sabden and up to the top of Pendle. It was a beautiful day again and we sat up there and talked and looked down over the Ribble Valley.
D*** told me that he had grown up in Australia. He was born in Liverpool and taken out to Australia on a ten pound passage in 1946.
He had left school at the age of 14 and gone to work in the stockyards and the slaughter house. He told me that he was a sucker for the lambs.
He said that sometimes when they killed a sheep, it would give birth to a lamb. Normally these lambs would just be killed, but D*** said he couldn't stand to think of something so small being killed just as it was born. He said his Mum was fed up of him turning up at home with yet another lamb to rear.......he said she told him that the only good thing about it was that they didn't need to mow their lawn. He told me about the time that they had played wag from school to swim in the creek. How he and his friends had ridden horses on the beach, how they had fished for yabbies to barbeque. How he had enjoyed th sun and outdoor life. I asked why they had come back to England. He told me that his dad was really sick and needed to come home to get treatment.
It all sounded a million miles from what I was used to.
D*** asked about my family.......about my parents, and my brothers.
He said he would love to meet them. He said that being the youngest son he missed having younger brothers and sisters. I told him that there was nothing to be missed....that we had to share whatever we had, that I never had anything to myself. Then I felt really bad because it all sounded like I was whining and sorry for myself.
The time just whizzed by and before we knew it our time together was up.
D*** dropped me off again at the bottom of the hill and just gave me a quick peck on the cheek, but said 'Can we go out on Saturday - maybe to a pub or something?'........I said 'I can't go to a pub, I'm too young and I don't drink' .......'OK' he said.......'flicks again then' and gave me a lovely smile. He got on his bike and roared off, but turned back to give me a wave. It felt like my knees turned to jelly. I was blushing when I got back in the house. Mum spotted my blushes and asked what we had been up to. 'Nothing' I told her...... it was perfectly true. She told me to be careful and not to get 'carried away'. I wasn't exactly sure what she meant. Later that evening she must have mentioned something to my dad because he said that if I ever came home pregnant and brought disgrace on the family he would put me out in the street.
No amount of reassurance from me would placate him..........to be continued.
