Him and me have been married a long time, are well past the point of no return, and though it’s not been all beer and skittles (but then, honestly, whose marriage is?) we have weathered quite well together – wrinkles and all. We are opposites in many aspects but have learnt to ignore annoying habits and idiosyncrasies the other might have – or should I say DOES have, and somehow have managed to retain peace and harmony along the way, most of the time anyway, that is except for in one area.
It’s said you shouldn’t argue about religion, money or politics but I have to admit I love a good argument, and I suppose it’s a matter of any Port in a storm. Take what you can.
We don’t argue about religion – mainly because we don’t have any, and we don’t argue about money for the same reason that we don’t argue about religion – well not enough to get excited about.
However, when politics raises its ugly head then peace and harmony fly through the door taking tranquillity with them for the ride.
His nibs is extremely one-eyed when it comes to this subject and as for me I think I must have been ejected from the womb clutching a wooden spoon in my tiny fingers as I am a natural born stirrer.
Although a tradesman all his working life, my bloke detests Unions and always has done, so of course it’s easy to tell which political party he doesn’t support. Is very vocal (expletives and all) in his dislike of all things connected with that lot. He blames them for everything and anything, but is strangely silent about bad decisions made by the party he does support.
I really don’t have any affiliation to either side and to be honest I don’t have much time for politicians per se, but I will give praise to good decisions and rubbish the bad whichever lot makes them, and unlike himself I try to see both sides of things. However, he has it fixed in his mind that I am on the opposite bench to him and for the sake of a good argument I don’t contradict this assumption. In fact I encourage it. More stirring.
I have no idea how he even knows what the opposing side’s views are because every time one of them comes on the TV to express an opinion his nibs presses the mute button on the remote!
So, when things are a bit too quiet here (and, dare I say, a bit boring) I know exactly how to stir the pot, and boy! does that pot come to boiling point very quickly. I’m cruel and it’s hilarious! He’s hilarious! It doesn’t help that none of our children support their father’s political views, for which fact I receive the blame, apparently having brainwashed the lot of them. As our kids are intelligent, freethinking individuals I doubt they would take any notice of what their mother said, why start now – it’s a long time since they did, if indeed they ever have!
However, I’m not entirely without compassion, and before the old boy has an apoplexy I simply say ‘whatever!’ and walk away…..then ‘peace’ reigns once more, that is until the next time I’m feeling bored.
