The trip to Spain, uncomfortable as it was didn't put me off travel.......in fact I think we travelled that way to Spain another couple of times.......it took about 30 hours to travel by coach and ferry.......which ate up almost 3 days of your total holiday.
In 1982 I worked the whole year without a break so that we could do another marathon journey........another 30 hour journey.
this time it was by Jumbo jet and we were flying off to Australia.
It cost us a lot of money for the flights......£4,500.......which I consoled myself by breaking it down to one and sixpence a mile......that didn't sound so bad. The reason it was so expensive was that we were flying out on the 30th of December.......which was considered PEAK time, also my daughter was charged as an adult.
I had never in my wildest dreams believed that I would travel to the other side of the globe. I looked at travel books, and planned what we were going to do and see........I took a great deal of pleasure from the aspect of planning. It was very hard to have to work for a whole year without a break so that I could take six weeks off. As lettie will no doubt confirm.....(when she gets back from her hols) nursing is not the easiest job in the world and sometimes you do need to get away from it for a while.
When I felt particularly tired or in need of a break I would get out the travel guides and go over in my mind the places we were going to visit......that helped tremendously. I took vitamins to help me survive and stave off some of the tiredness.
We were going out to Melbourne and we were going to stay with my husbands nephew and his family......he had two small children.
They had put their Christmas on hold, and were not going to celebrate Christmas until we arrived.
I found it very hard to imagine having Roast Turkey and all the trimming at the height of summer......but I was willing to give it a try.
