You think that once your little ones have got a full set of teeth, you can kiss goodbye to sleepless nights.
Then come the childhood illnesses. You worry and you fret.....and still they grow.
Then comes school. You worry about whether they are making friends...what kind of friends...are they doing well with the schoolwork.....are they being bullied at school.
The come the teen years. They go out in inclement weather in ludicrous outfits.....not enough material to make a babygro......you lie awake until you hear the taxi door slam(that is, if you aren't being the taxi for the night) hear the key in the door and the stumble up the stairs.
You lie awake worrying about what your young adult is up to. You pray that you have given them the nous to navigate the pitfalls that life throws at them...and though you realise that you cannot live their lives for them...you still worry.
They get married have children of their own.......you think your sleepless nights are over.....but life is always ready to throw you that curved ball.
Where am I going with this?
I had a sleepless night last night.
Yesterday morning my daughter was whisked away in an ambulance, and ferried to RBH with flashing blue lights and sirens.
That in itself is a worry...but then she spent three and a half hours in theatre......and is currently in ICU, ventilated, sedated after major emergency surgery.
Why am I telling you all this?.....Well,, not for sympathy(but a few good vibes/thoughts would not go amiss right now)...I'm telling you so that you can really appreciate what is most valuable in life...and that is family.
It is they who are the bedrock of your life, they will be there when all else fails you...and I know sometimes we don't always like them very much...we still love them.
It is also a reminder to me...that when I am burbling away on some inconsequential topic, the chaff of life. To stand still and get the perspective of what are the important things in life.
The really important things.
