Harold and Bertha Entwisle

Would be grateful for any information regarding Harold and Bertha Entwisle of Accrington. Harold was a Cotton Manufacturer born abt 1879, son of Joseph and Mary, Cotton Manufacturers. Have often wondered what happened to Harold and Bertha, where they lived, what was the Mill name,
Thank you,
Jan

Re: Harold and Bertha Entwisle

I haven't time at present, but the answer may well be in Mike Rothwell's book -Industrial Heritage of Hyndburn. Also Accrington Chronology & Men of Mark by Ainsworth. An Entwisle was starting partner with Kenyon in the Ewbank company. I think he was an early mayor. Harold may have been his son. Censuses should provide addresses.

Re: Harold and Bertha Entwisle

There is an Entwistle/Entwisle Family History Society - Known as a one-name society. A bloke at Gt Harwood is an officer of it I think - Tim Enty.

Re: Harold and Bertha Entwisle

You missed showing the 1911 Census results for Harold.

By this time he had married Bertha and they were living at:
4 Holly Lane, Accrington.

He is now registered as a Cotton Manufacturer
No Children but they had a servant registered at that address

Re: Harold and Bertha Entwisle

I have PMd you, Jan......I searched Entwistle using the search facilioty - 225 sources are to many for me to lok at. I wondered if there has ever been any discussion on here about Tommy Ent, a 'tramp' in the town when I was a lad in the 40s %& 50s. He was still sleeping out when I left Acc in 1960. He didn't tramp out of the town so far as I am aware. He slept in the brick kilns at Nori works. He was a quietly spoke , placid chap.

There was a tramp in our area (Whalley Road/Queens Road) in the 50s who used to sleep in the kilns. He would call at our house and my mum would always give him something. Don't know his name but I wonder if this the chap you are referring to.

I can remember Tommy Ent,Bob not certain but think twas the Whinney Hill Brickyard were he kipped down. he was a placid quietly spoken geezer, unlike Owd Henry harmless but much louder, especially when he was on front row in the Kings Hall Cinema. Mind yeh he was kipping just around the corner from yon, up the raggy back at Readers Rag Shop.

Re: Harold and Bertha Entwisle

I cannot find my copy of 'Men of Mark' I suspect that Joseph may be the man in the Ewbank set-up - Entwisle & Kenyon. His house was at the end of Entwisle Street. This surname often gets spelled with a T after the S. There have been several Entwisles/Entwistles in Acrington's industrial past.

Re: Harold and Bertha Entwisle

Hi,
Good to re visit, not been on the Accrington Web for a while. I am still trying to find out what happened to my Great Aunt Bertha, Bertha married Harold Entwisle, cotton manufacturer. One day I may find the answer. I did find out they had a daughter Mary Noreen Entwisle, she was born in 1911 at Accrington, she moved to Brighton and married. I am still a novice when it comes to using this site,
Regards Jan
