Tom Finney

Died age 95. Just been listening to the eulogies on 5live...never dived, ultimate loyalty to the club he was born a few streets away from. A guy who had a plumbing business who may have fixed a toilet in the morning before giving 90 honest minutes at 3pm, with boots that weighed a ton and a ball so hard that only a hero or a nutcase put his head to.

Never saw him play, listened to my dad banging on about him, Armfield and Matthews many a time. Most of the premier league prima donnas could learn a lot from someone who could take a tackle and stay on his feet and caught the bus home with his boots around his neck.

I just wonder how many people will know the name Suarez, Rooney, Nasri, Dzeko or Ozil in 2084

Re: Tom Finney

Sir Tom, died age 91 and what a great player, gentleman, team man and the greatest example of how the game should be played. A one club man who gave everything he had and never complained, one of Englands greatest. R.I.P. Sir Tom.

An outstanding man in so many ways - gentle man , footballer , plumber , citizen of Preston , family man , loyal , fair etc .

Today's marred lot can't hold a candle to Tom Finney .

Re: Tom Finney

I had the privilege to watch Tom Finney play on many occasions and to have met him once. He was a wonderful footballer and a real gentleman. In all his career he was never booked. Not many of todays players will be able to say that when their playing days are over. The prima donnas of the present are not fit to lace the boots of the likes of Finney.
Whats more they would struggle playing in 'real' football boots and with a leather case ball. Sadly the players such as Finney, Matthews, Lofthouse and Mcilroy with their super talents but unassuming manners will never be seen again.Mores the pity. R.I.P Tom and Thank You for the hundreds of hours of delight you gave the fans lucky enough to watch you play.

Re: Tom Finney

When i was lad me dad used to tell me,England played Tom Finney out of position, reason being it was the ONLY way they could accommodate Stanley Matthews in the side, otherwise the great Stan would never have got a cap. I have read as much that this was the case since Tom Finney died. That says to me how great the guy was.

Re: Tom Finney

Perfectly true Cash. Finney could play any one of the five forward spots whereas Mathews was strictly a right winger. Sir Tom was just that good a player.
