There were actually a lot of soft drinks only clubs back in the 60's. Accy Disco which was on the upper floor of the red brick building on the corner of Whalley Road and Broadway, for instance. There were many more across the country including the famous Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Scene club in London. People went for the music, the "buzz" and because these were the places to be seen. If you wanted a drink, you nipped out to a nearby pub (in Accy Disco's case, the Broadway). Obviously amphetamine use did occur in many of these clubs, but there were plenty who just went to dance to soul records and enjoy the atmosphere.
