Di think yourself lucky I didn't have a camera with me when we went to Venice otherwise I'd be boring everyone rigid with my pics! It has to be one of my favourite places ever.
Margaret's twisted my arm so I am going to post some of the mosaic pics - they're not wonderful but I've tweaked them to best advantage on photoscape. I think one of the reasons I didn't get good pics is that the mosaics are high up and there was not much zoom on the camera I was using.
1-5 are in San Apollinare Nuovo. The mosaics run in bands along the top of the walls and are quite easy to see if you crane your neck like Richard is doing.
6-10 are in the basilica of San Vitale. This has a much more complicated architecture - it's octagonal in shape with a dome and is very high as shown on one of the pics. The mosaics are very difficult to get in shot and one of these pics doesn't have mosaics - it's just there to show the architecture with the lovely double headed Byzantine columns like two cushions one on top of the other.
Bear in mind that all this dates from the sixth century.
