Colin Wilson, though not always the most picky of source choosers makes some valid points in A Criminal History of Mankind about dispossessed or rootless societies losing a degree of compassion for their fellow man.
"Dissatisfaction with the federal government" and a struggle to sort out a "national mindset": this is Canada Hey, we got it in spades.

The point I was making, or attempting, is that one can't come to conclusions from premises so vague and so ... I don't know, "silly" comes to mind ... as "America has no history". There are lots of histories in America, and these reflect themselves in the regional and ethnic, and a multitude of other differences.

And the allegiance to the flag thingy ... swearing allegiance to the flag doesn't turn anyone into a patriot. Hey, I said the Lord's Prayer every day I went to school ... didn't make me much of a Christian
