'Papermaking was introduced to Church and Oswaldtwistle from Darwen in the 1870s, and
also utilised some of the existing mill buildings. In Oswaldtwistle, White Ash Higher Mill
was converted to papermaking in 1875 (Rothwell 1993, 56) and the Church Paper
Company was established at Tomknitter Bridge bleachworks in 1875, but lasted only four
years.'
