I think you are right. Maybe the frogs would have been friendlier to the UK if it hadn't been for Mers-el-Kebir ... even though I don't think this should have been too much of a problem; after all, the sinking of French fleets by the British was quite a normal occurence. Come to think of it, some aspiring popular historian could write a book about it. "From Sluys to Mers-el-Kebir: Six Hundred Years of French Naval Ineptitude." If I weren't so old and lazy ... and stoned a lot of the time
