No, lowering the lid doesn't take as much effort as lifting it as you have gravity to assist you.

Yes it's a bit disconcerting going to sit on the loo and suddenly finding yourself a few inches lower than you thought you were going to be. Actually the opposite once happened to me - I sat on the loo without noticing the lid was down and before I realised it the floor was very wet... it was on a train - I rushed out of the loo and beat a hasty retreat to the other end of the train!

I look on men leaving the lid/seat up in the same way as we were talking about snoring partners the other day - at least you know they're still there to carry on with their bad habits.
