If the grown ups were talking, and we asked who they were talking about it was always 'Icky, the fire bobby' or 'Lady Lace-Holes'....and if we asked what something was we were told it was 'lay o'ers fer meddlers, and crutches fer lame ducks'....if we asked how old a grown up was we were told 'as old as his tongue and younger than his teeth'.
I'm sure if I dredge my memory, I will think of more, but that's enough to be going on with.
