Thatcher was increasingly unpopular with the electorate which threatened the chances of the Tories winning a future General Election. When Geoffrey Howe severely criticised her stance on Europe in his resignation speech Michael Heseltine launched a leadership bid. Being advised by a number of close colleagues that she would lose a leadership election she decided to stand down.
