If I was working either of my nights, I am able to get to the games on an afternoon, but have to leave early as I work in Preston, likewise if the games are at night, I finish at 1745 after a day shift, just gives me enough time to get home and changed ready for a night match. If I am on duty or unable to take time off due to numbers at work, tough. If I got a season ticket, I would have to take these things into consideration. However, for me, I prefer pay on the gate or getting tickets in advance to watch my favourite team. I suspect most season ticket holders are like you and retired, in fact when I retire next year, will probably get a season ticket for 2014/2015 season regardless of which league we are in.
It depends on your place of work and how shifts are split for that sort of thing though obviously not all jobs are the same.

As has been mentioned fair warning is the key here give those who travel time to organise their work and family commitments
