Thank you gpick for posting the photos and bringing back memories for me.
When I was on the tankers we had a contract with Albright and Wilson whose chemical plant was right on the top of the hill after you passed through the town. I always enjoyed the drive up there especially as I was getting paid for the pleasure.
Like you I always thought the Council Estate must have the best view of any estate in the world.
Two years ago we stayed at Haverigg and had a train ride to Whitehaven, what a difference there is now, especially the harbour which used to be full of rotting boats and filth.
The new apartments on the marina are going for up to a millions quids, you could have bought half of the town for that twenty years ago.
I took a few photos when we were there but I have no idea what the little tower was for. Just to the left of it is another round thing, maybe they are vents for the old mine.
