Re: Today in pictures
Yesteday I had the honour of attending a lecture by a Nobel prize winner at UCLAN in Preston.
The person in question is Professor Sir Harry Kroto FRS, Nobel Laureate in chemistry in 1995. He is in Preston to receive an honorary fellowship at the university's graduation ceremony.
Known as one of the team who discovered buckminsterfullerene or buckyballs, a novel form of carbon, he is now at Florida state university. His lecture focused on aspects of creativity and one of his great interests is graphic design. It was a stimulating evening.
I graduated with my first degree from UCLAN and was a graduate student at the university of Sussex when Sir Harry was just starting out as a lecturer there in the late 1960s and have followed his career with interest. He was born and brought up in Lancashire with European immigrant parents and went to Bolton school along with Sir Ian McKellen.
Anyway I tried to get some photos but they are not good. First of all the lectern was in the way and then when he came out from behind it and the lights went on my camera battery died. Grrr...!!
