I must partly disagree with you on this point. Yes, the General Staff and most senior officers of the First World War era proved to be incompetent, as they were in previous conflicts and subsequently. However, the Lieutenants, Captains and Majors, and no doubt some of the Half Colonels, most, if not all of whom disagreed with the orders they received and should therefore be viewed in quite a different light than the senior officers.
The discipline of the British Military was, and is to this day, is to follow the orders they receive.
