Think back about ten years or so, when the size of the 5,10,20 & 50p coins were changed, all the machines were converted almost over night.
Having said that, maybe the Gov' has actually created a few temporary jobs for someone to go around changing the mechanical ones in shopping trolleys?

If that's the case less,the costs won't outweigh the cost of forgery.
Perhaps the markets will start selling trolley tokens.
