Only helps reunite if the dog is found alive and taken to vet/dog home, as in this case.

Dog thieves are getting wise to the microchip. They do their own scan, and if a chip is found, they kill the dog and cut out the chip.
When we had our dogs chipped, I don't recall the vet scanning them first to see if there was a chip already there. What happens with the scan if "new" owners put a second chip in there?
