Thanks for your very helpful response and sorry for the delay in replying. I have now discovered through an ancestry.co.uk DNA test that my great-grandmother was Prussian by birth, not a Russian Jew, so I haven't followed up the information you gave me yet, although I think the woman who brought her up, Eliza Dale, must be connected in some way to the Jewish community.
