Mums used to hold a baby over the tar boiler if it had croup...... it was supposed to cure it.
As for hot summers and playing with gas tar.......one of my brothers once did that and got it stuck in his hair and on his school pants......Mother was not best pleased.... in fact she was furious......so much so that she shaved his head rather than just cutting the bit with the gas tar in. Everyone at his school thought he had nits. The trousers were treated with lard.
