Perhaps the above becomes automatic once maternal instincts set in?
Just like when my son was at the age of learning to use a knife and fork, my missus and I were out for a meal, my steak arrived, she automatically took my plate from me and started cutting everything into mouth size bites, I sat bemused staring at her, knife and fork in hand, she had managed to carve about 95% of my meal whilst talking away without realising were she was or whose meal she had so obligingly dissected!
