Twenty eight is correct with his list of six players who would definitely make a significant difference!
IMHO Four four two is the regular formation to play. I have said before that 4-4-2 ‘basically’ becomes 2-4-4 when you attack. This maintains the central core of the team structure down the centre of the pitch. The two wide midfield players have to be mobile and be able to play like wingers. The two wide defenders have to be good tackling full backs with the mobility to get forward too! The six down the centre of the pitch don’t need to wander to far, thus maintaining the core of the formation. Of course ‘set plays’ are slightly different when your big defenders can take up receiver positions in the opponents penalty box.
