I use an app to put on my bets, so much more convenient than going down town to a bookies and mixing with the non smiling punters you mentioned earlier. But with that convenience comes what is temptation for others.
Although the site I use does give lip service to 'safer gambling' and caring about the punter just next door to the horse racing section there is a casino programme which I have no Interest in and yet at least twice a day my purveyor of 'safer gambling' offers me a minimum £10 to have a few free spins on there.
Why? because they want me hooked and spending more than I can afford a few spins of a roulette wheel would ruin my sometimes profitable little punts!
