I wouldn't regard going to church as a leisure activity. You try sitting for 2 hours listening to a sermon which is enough to cure most people of insomnia, and trying to control 2 bored children for that time. This church didn't have a kids Sunday School, so not a lot of choice in the matter.
The problem was, that I always found church deathly boring anyway, even when I was young.
