2024/25 Prediction League Game 42 v Tranmere (home)

Given our precarious position, you may all have developed an eager interest in the Bananarama around now ……… One “auto” promotion, two “seeded” sides, and four more for the numbers……………….. But have you looked at the table, which reads

Barnet 91 pts
York 83
Vegan Greenpeace 75
Oldham 66

And ten points cover the next nine teams …………… at the other end, Ebbsfleet (“Own the club, pick the team” – was anyone else a member of that set-up back in the day? (apart from me – but then for one season I actually held a season ticket for Albion Rovers, not that I ever got there) – are down (again) with 2 wins and 27 points from safety, Fylde are almost down (again) too

So; five games to go, and it’s tight at the top but just as tight at the bottom of League Two …..Carlisle snuck a comeback win on Saturday against Newport, who lost 3-2 from a 2-0 lead, and have 34 points with 15 to play for; they haven’t been out of the bottom two for many months ………….Morecambe are 23rd on 36 points, and they host Carlisle on Monday next in a “survive or die” game ……. We have 42 points but have Tranmere and Carlisle to play at home in 2 x six-pointers that we CAN’T lose: Tranmere have 43, Harrogate have 45, The Plastic Wombles have 46 and Newport and Gillingham have 47

Consistency is the name of the game, and putting a run together …… So (Starter for Ten) how long is it since Carlisle last won back-to-back League games?

Tranmere is actually in Birkenhead ….. they were formed in 1884, and have played at Prenton Park since 1912 ……….. the club is owned by MarkandNicolaPalios, and the current (interim) manager – and they’ve had a few – is Andy Crosbie, with Neil Danns as his Assistant ………….. Their only League title is Div 3 North in 1937/38, although they’ve had Playoff promotions a few times as well. In 1992/93 they finished 4th in what is now Le Championnat (highest ever place) ……….. “most Goals in a Season” is shared by Bunny Bell (1934/35) and John Aldridge (1991/92) and the leading appearance maker remains Ray Mathias with 637

Second Starter for Ten; France’s National side has had some gifted goal scorers – Juste Fontaine, Cantona, Mbappe, Trezeguet, Thierry Henry; but who is the leading scorer for France overall?

This is their fifth consecutive season in League Two; they finished last season in 16th place, one place above us by virtue of a not-as-bad-as-ours GD ………… We beat them away 1-0 on 25th February after the Fog Postponement from Boxing Day, our goal by Whalley (Shaun, not Eric) on 49 mins ………………… Head-to-head – if you strip out all the tinpot cup games – is W3 D1 L3, although we have won the last two in the League …………. No new ProperSignings since last August, but three on loan – two form Man U and one from Blackburn

Starter for Ten number 3: what unwanted record did Leicester City recently achieve in the Prawn Sandwich League?

Currently Tranmere sit 21st in L2 with a record of P41 W10 D13 L18 GF36 GA58 on 43 points …… we’re 22nd with 10 wins 12 draws and 19 defeats, but with GF46 and GA63; IF we beat them, and Carlisle, we live to fight another day (probably), which is in truth more than we deserve (actually) …… let us pray that we finish with two teams below us

Deadline for entries is, as always, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3.00pm on Saturday 12th April (get your ISAs paid up!)

And Carlisle last won back-to-back League games on 4th March 2023 (2-1 v Grimsby at home) and 11th March 2023 (2-1 at Swindon) ………… that’s 98 games and 25 months ago, although the record is held by Tier 8 Bradford Park Avenue, who didn’t win consecutive games in their last 145 games prior to losing their League status, lasting from April 1967 and ending when they went out of the League in May 1970 …………. And France’s leading scorer is Olivier Giroud with 57, followed by Thierry on 51 ………. And Leicester’s unwanted record is being the first League club ever to lose eight consecutive home matches without scoring a single goal ……………..

Good luck to everyone! …….Keep the Faith! …….. And thanks for playing!
