Sperm donors to be identified

Children born using donated eggs or sperm will be able to find out who helped give them life from today.

Records have always been kept confidential but a change in the law means identities can be released when children reach 18.

The move has prompted fears of a shortage of future donors, putting even more barriers in the way of infertile couples desperate to have a baby.

Health Minister Stephen Ladyman said: "We think it is right that donor-conceived people should be able to have information, should they want it, about their genetic origins and that is why we have changed the law on donor anonymity.

"We are working hard with the National Gamete Donation Trust to encourage more people to become donors.

"And we have launched an awareness campaign which aims to change public perceptions of donation."
