Re: Take me back.(soul)
I would say that Northern Soul had its origins at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester around 68/69. Soul music in America was moving in a funky James Brown-style direction, but the dancers at the Wheel preferred the 60's Motown-style sound. To satisfy the demand for fresh sounds the DJs began to dig out obscure records in tihs style which had been released in the 60's, but ignored at the time. The cult rapidly grew, spreading to Blackpool Mecca, the Torch in Stoke and of course Wigan Casino where it achieved national prominence. Nowadays it's a catch-all term for any obscure or semi-obscure 60's or even 70's record in this style.
