The TV, telephone, internet kit they have now in hospitals is called patientline. Children under 16 get this for free. Everybody else has to pay by buying a card to make the machine work. The cards are expensive up tp £10 per day if you want internet. This is a money making racket by the patientline companies. The government wanted this system so that all patients could have their own phone line and the nurses wouldn't have to keep answering the phone to relatives, (we aren't allowed to give any information to relatives anyway). Lots of different companies are now installing their own version of this system into hospitals and raking in the cash. The system never works, nobody ever answers the helpline number which is probably a call centre abroad and the share prices for these companies are going down the pan.
All of our wards at work had their own tellys. Our aerials were taken down by this company so that patients would have to pay to watch their system. Their system is faulty more often than it is working, so lots of patients are bored witless. The nursing staff have to bear the brunt of people complaining about the system, so our workload has not lightened one iota.... Another ill thought out government scheme, just don't buy shares in these companies, you will lose money...
