They dont usually need formatting when you get them, usually work straight out the packet.
DO NOT format the card with a pc if its running windows XP, it wont work after in your camera as it will be formatted using the ntfs file system and not fat32 as the camera needs. If you do format on the pc you will have to do it again on the camera to get it to work
