Dunno... where were you stood?
I've seen all the games so far this season and I thought Saturday's performance was the best we've played so far. However, there are a number of things that scream out for change, in my opinion.
1. The goalkeeper situation, although unlucky in some ways, has become farcical. This lad from Charlton looks a good prospect, but he's not here for very long and if the club knew that Jones had a potential serious problem, shouldn't the manager have been looking for someone else during the Summer?
2. The defence is potentially better than last season, but Williams looks well out of his depth. I know he's been played out of position in games this season, but all too often he's rash and undisciplined. Flynn, Welch and Tretton (if he ever returns) are all better defenders, so why is he constantly in the side? My thinking is, once all the others are fit, Williams will be moved in to midfield and act as the ball winner.
3. The midfield is lightweight and too easily over-run. You can't play Craney in a 4-4-2 formation, it's as simple as that, although he has appeared more committed this season. You need a ball winner in the centre of midfield and although Jagielka has been off his game in the early matches, perhaps if he was played in the middle he'd solve a few problems? Roberts has been a major disappointment and at the moment doesn't look up to the task.
4. Up front Mullin thrives on crosses and apart from the one on Saturday, he hasn't been getting any. I think Paul may struggle this season if we don't have anyone to provide for him. Mangan has enormous potential and he gives us something we don't have... pace up front. However, he's very young and experienced Conference defenders know how to hold him off and play him out of the game. We really do need another experienced goalscorer to partner Mullin and someone to provide quality crosses.
5. To say the players are training for hours every day, I've been disappointed by the lack of variety at corners and set-pieces. Free-kicks in particular seem devoid of creativity, with so many going harmlessly out of play. Likewise, we seem to be devoid of variety in our other play as well. The 'big punt' seems to dominate our play and against decent defences it's largely ineffective as well. To say we have a manager, an assistant manager and a full-time coach, you'd think we'd be able to do better than big kick tactics wouldn't you?
I can't remember coming on this messageboard criticising individuals before, but this has been brewing inside me for weeks now. Remember that football always produces differing opinions and these are mine. Discussion is the lifeblood of an messageboard, so where better to post my opinions?
