Re: Does God have a sense of humour?

He got a couple of replies in last week's column :

In last week's columns, I posed the question: 'Does the existence of Cowdenbeath or Ac
crington Stanley prove that God has a sense of humour or that He feels suffering is good for the soul?' which inspired this e-mailed response from Zayn H. "It just proves you know nothing about football and obviously shows you have either jumped on the Chelsea bandwagon or you are a fair weather Man United fan."

Blessedly, Mike Allen came up with the voice of reason. "You asked if the existence of Accrington Stanley proved that God has a sense of humour. Of course he does! And so do the fans who turn out every week to the Interlink Express Stadium to see John Coleman's team at the top of the Conference and on the verge of a return to the Football League. See you at Swindon next season."

Andy Keeler wrote: "The Kentish commuter town of Tonbridge is not somewhere you might ordinarily expect to find a pocket of Cowdenbeath supporters. However, a few friends and I now keep one eye fondly on the fortunes of 'The Blue Brazil', stemming from an incident a couple of years ago in our local.

"Seeing them mentioned on Football Focus, one of our group was suddenly insistent that 'Beath had a player on their books called 'Pale Grey'. This intrigued the rest of us so much (it being that stage in a rather long afternoon) that I called Directory Inquiries, and asked to be connected to Cowdenbeath Football Club in order to verify this magnificent moniker at source.

"A very polite-sounding lady answered, and I explained the reason for my call. After listening patiently she said, seemingly in all sincerity, 'I'm ever so sorry sir, but you have come through to Cowdenbeath Post Office, although the football club is just over the road, so if you'd hold on for a wee while I could pop over and ask them.'

"Now that's what I call football in the community! And hence the reason we have been armchair 'Brazilians' ever since."
