A 22-year-old man died and a woman was seriously injured when their speeding car went out of control as they overtook a friend's vehicle in a residential street.
Another 22-year-old man who was in the other car has been arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, following the crash in Livesey Branch Road, Blackburn .
Police said the man was killed when his Renault Clio clipped a traffic island while trying to overtake another Clio at 60mph in a 30mph zone at 8.40pm yesterday.
The car careered into a parked BT van, sending both vehicles hurtling 40 feet down the road and demolishing a garden wall.
The Clio then hit a parked Ford Ranger and a Peugeot 106 before coming to a halt in the driveway of a semi-detached house.
Firefighters cut the man, aged 22, and a woman in her 20s free from the wreckage of the Clio.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was today in a stable condition in Blackburn Royal Infirmary with serious head, chest and neck injuries.
