It would be win win for him for if Labour were voted back in it could be seen as a public mandate. If they lose non get the job and the rift in the party would be to blame. Personally I think Gogs Brown fae the Kingdom is worried that Labour will lose the next election and he wants his shot now. The more candidates there are if a challenge comes then the party will be split even more and could end up unelectable again.
