Free democratic countries with the stiffest sentences often have the highest crime rates. There is no correlation between stiff sentences and reduction in crime. Now I am no softy but I want to see some evidence. Crime seems to be reduced in countries with capital punishment where there are restrictions on freedoms.
I was in Kenya where the death penalty is handed out like confetti at a wedding. The criminals carry guns and knives and kill whilst committing their crimes rather than just commit the crime. In Kenya it is important (for criminals) to kill all potential witnesses. I believe Nairobi has the highest homicide rate in the world as well as the toughest sentencing.
