egg shells work to a certain extent, also beer traps as expat says, they also say copper rings, but I'm not sure if it's the copper, or if they don't like the sharp top to the ring.

I even get snails on my roof garden, ones on top of the ground floor the others on top of first floor they climb up just eat my hostas .
