The Smiths made the most unique music of their generation - perhaps any generation. Morrissey's lyrics were as good as that of Byron & Blake and there is nothing that Johnny Marr cannot do on a guitar; the musical ascpect of that band is overwhelming. I think that makes them a bit more than "half decent".
...and derivativeism isn't a word.
