I should think that by the time that someone is old enough to understand the rules of Monopoly they should already be able to add up and subtract money, if nothing else. By the time that I was 8 or 9 I could add up cash and I had to contend with pounds, shillings, pence, halfpennies and even farthings.
For those who haven’t a clue what I’m on about it was like this:
Four farthings made one penny.
Two halfpennies made one penny.
Twelve pence equalled one shilling.
20 shillings equalled one pound also known as a sovereign.
Then there was the guinea, which equalled one pound, one shilling.
So try adding £3 – 15 – 10½ to £7 – 9 - 4¾
Answer £11 - 5 - 3¼
